The Joining: you do not play a character

The Joining: you do not play a character

Most games hand you a character sheet. This one hands you someone's life.

In the Chronicle you are the Witness. You do not invent a hero, pick a class, or roll for your strengths. Through what was kept in clay, you join a person who lived: you arrive inside them mid-gesture, and their hands go on with work you never learned. You see through their eyes. You choose as yourself. The life around you is theirs.

And it is a body before it is a story. You stand nearer the ground than you are used to, or higher. The breath sits differently in the chest. The hands know a craft yours never held, and when you bend over still water, the face that looks back is not yours.

The Joining is an occupancy, not a costume. The one you join is present the whole way, and you feel them. A gladness arrives that is not yours, like warmth through a shared wall. A word surfaces that no one taught you. Under strain, their hands may begin something on their own, and the wisest thing you can do is let them finish it.

The world notices too. The people around the one you wear have known them for years, and when your choices bend that life out of its shape, they see it: an overseer goes quiet in a doorway, a gatekeeper reads his own ledger twice. You are living among people who know the difference.

You also know only what they know. Strangers stay strangers until someone gives a name. Signs stay silent until you learn to read them. The world does not open because you, the player, are clever about history. It opens the way a life opens, one earned name at a time.

And no two Joinings hold alike. A whole fit takes at once, first breath to fingertips, and reads clean all the way down. A partial one has seams: the hold thins without warning, for one breath you are yourself again, wherever your own hands are, and then the clay pulls you back. The season you begin with is a partial joining, and it wears its seams honestly. What a whole fit costs, and whether every hold should be trusted, the Chronicle answers in its own time.

The first season is called The Witness Returns. Now you know what the word means. Who you join first, and what is asked of you there, is waiting where the story starts.
