Inanna, Queen of Heaven

Before there were kings in Uruk, there was Inanna.

She is the great goddess of ancient Sumer: love and war in one, the morning and evening star, and the divine Lady of Uruk itself. The Sumerians gave her the me, the powers that hold civilization together, and told how she went down through the seven gates of the underworld and came back changed. It is one of the oldest stories of descent and return anyone ever wrote down.

Her first known poet was a real woman, Enheduanna of Ur, the earliest author in history we can name. When she wrote hymns to Inanna four thousand years ago, she signed them.

Inanna is why the eight-pointed star sits at the heart of our world. Her light is on the mark you already know.
