The real history behind Uruk

Chronicles of Uruk is fiction, but the ground under it is not.

There was a real city called Uruk, among the first on Earth, in the marshes of southern Mesopotamia. There was a real king remembered as Gilgamesh, and the oldest surviving great story is about him. There were real gods, the Anunnaki, imagined by the same people who invented writing itself, pressed in wedge-marks into wet clay.
